Navajo Rug

Charlie Sandburg was invited to East Aurora, New York by well known writer and philosopher Elbert Hubbard to speak at the "Convention of the Elect". It was an honor to be invited by Hubbard and an endorsement Sandburg hoped would increase his lecturing revenue. Hubbard had created a community of artisans who called themselves Roycrofters who believed in work for art and glory. The convention was held at the Roycroft Inn, owned by Hubbard, which was fashioned in stone fireplaces, natural woods, handcrafted functional furniture and handicrafts from around the country. It was a monumental display of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. On the wall were brightly colored Navajo rugs, similar to those Sandburg would purchase later in his life in the American southwest as he too believed in the value of items crafted by the human hand.
