Suit Coat
Carl Sandburg was rarely seen at a public engagement without his suit coat and bow tie. It was an image the public would become familiar with, as by 1954 he was beginning to appear on many television programs. He discovered that these programs were seen by a much larger audience than a lecture hall provided, and since they were taped were often rebroadcast. These programs were much less taxing on an aging Sandburg than a busy lecture schedule. Sandburg believed, "Fifteen minutes of TV are just as remunerative as and far less wearing than lecture programs all over the country." (Niven, p 638)
