Obsidian or volcanic glass is found in the Jemez Mountains near Bandelier. Like glass, it can be chipped to create extremely sharp edges. That made it a very valuable material for early peoples. It was widely used for making tools. The Jemez deposits may have been one of the resources that originally attracted people to this area.
