Frederick, MD – Maryland’s State Highway Administration will be replacing the bridge on MD 355 (Urbana Pike) over the CSX railroad tracks located in Monocacy National Battlefield. The first phase of construction will install a temporary bridge that will allow the road to remain open during construction, although access to the park’s New Jersey Monument and Junction Parking Lot will both be closed for the duration of the project, which is projected to be completed by Summer 2019.

The project, part of an effort to fix structurally deficient bridges in the state, will include the addition of shoulders and a sidewalk which will allow for bicyclist and pedestrian trails that will enable the park to expand access to new areas of the battlefield not currently available to visitors.

Initially established as a National Military Park in 1934, Monocacy National Battlefield commemorates “The Battle that Saved Washington,” fought on July 9, 1864. The park consists of six historic properties covering 1,647 acres and served nearly 80,000 visitors in 2016.
