Cactus Flat, SD – The 44th Missile Wing welcomes back one of its own.

On July 11th, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is happy to welcome Major General Fred Stoss to the park. General Stoss is coming out to “give back” to the history of one of the first units he was assigned to in his Air Force career, the 44th Strategic Missile Wing. At 1:30 p.m., in the visitor center theater, the Major General will discuss his experiences serving in South Dakota during the Cold War. This program is free and open to the public.

The park’s preserved sites, Delta-01 and Delta-09 were part of a 10-missile operational unit known as Delta Flight, assigned to the 66th Strategic Missile Squadron of the 44th Missile Wing, headquartered at Ellsworth Air Force Base. The park is proud to welcome General Stoss back to some of his personal and the nation’s history.

Major General Ferdinand “Fred” B. Stoss presently serves as Director of Operations and Communications, Headquarters Air Force Global Strike Command, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. General Stoss provides policy, and guidance and advocates for resources for the command’s nuclear, conventional and cyber forces.

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site's headquarters and visitor center is located off of exit 131, Interstate 90. The park consists of three sites along a fifteen mile stretch of Interstate 90 in Western South Dakota. Authorized by Congress in 1999, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site preserves components of the Minuteman II intercontinental ballistic missile system, interpreting the deterrent value of the land-based portion of America's nuclear defense during the Cold War era and commemorating the people and events associated with this recent period of American history. The park is open daily 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. More information about the park can be found on the internet at www.nps.gov/mimi or by phone at: 605-433-5552.
