Due to the continued closure of Spruce Tree House cliff dwelling, Mesa Verde National Park is canceling the 2016 Holiday Open House and Luminaria event. With the ongoing concern over the stability of the rock arch in the Spruce Tree House alcove, park officials have determined entering the alcove to place lanterns in the site is an unnecessary risk to staff members.

“I regret that we have to cancel the event,” Cliff Spencer, Mesa Verde Superintendent, said, “but I cannot justify allowing our staff into Spruce Tree House to place and light the lanterns with the risk of rock fall present.  We’re looking forward to the geotechnical analysis of the alcove arch next year. That will hopefully give us a better insight into the current condition, and future steps.” You can find out more information and links to a video about the rockfall hazard and Spruce Tree House Closure on the park website

The park would like to thank everyone for their support and interest. We encourage you to take part in other holiday activities in your local area.
