Mesa Verde National Park is planning to implement two prescribed fires during the week of October 24, as weather allows. These controlled burns are being conducted to reduce the wildland fire hazard next to the Far View Lodge and to maintain the Chapin Mesa Safety Zone.
The Far View Lodge Prescribed Fire is 44 acres in size and is primarily comprised of Gamble oak and serviceberry brush. This fire is part of an ongoing effort to protect the Far View Lodge from wildfires by lowering the levels of hazardous fuels that are adjacent to these structures.
The Chapin Mesa Safety Zone Prescribed Fire is five acres in size and is a maintenance burn that is designed to remove brush encroachment that has occurred since the safety zone was constructed ten years ago.
