On Sunday, September 19, Mesa Verde National Park opened Wetherill Mesa to allow visitors to hike and bike along the tram road. Nearly 300 visitors accepted and thoroughly enjoyed a beautiful fall day in the park.
Many visitors brought a picnic lunch to enjoy while others purchased a lunch from the Mesa Verde Community Club at the kiosk. Visitors included lots of locals who were very excited about the opportunity to visit Wetherill after Labor Day when the crowds have lessened. Other visitors came from far away and were pleased to learn they would be able to visit Long House and Step House. Everyone attending agreed that it was a great opportunity and expressed a desire to see it continued in the future.
The Bike and Hike is a part of a pilot program for new opportunities for visitors to Mesa Verde National Park. Because of the success of this event, it will be repeated on Saturday, October 9, 2010 and possibly late next spring. For additional information call 970-529-4465.
