Mesa Verde Superintendent, Larry Wiese, in consultation with the park’s fire management staff, has lifted the fire ban that has been in effect since August 17, 2009. Recent September rains have lowered fire danger indices to below average levels for this time of the year. Effective September 17th, open fires or charcoal fires are no longer prohibited in Morefield Campground, Chapin Mesa Picnic Area or park residences. Park officials wish to thank park visitors and residents for their cooperation during the period of high fire danger in the park this summer.
