Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has spent nearly ten years making this film, tracing the birth of the national park idea in the mid-1800’s and following its evolution for nearly 150 years. National parks, a uniquely American idea, set aside special places in the country to be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for all Americans. Burns believes this is the most stunning cinematography in Florentine Films’ history.
The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is not a travelogue of national parks, but a story of people: people from every conceivable background – rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs. It is a story full of struggle and conflict, high ideals and crass opportunism, stirring adventure and enduring inspiration – set against the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable. It is a biography of compelling characters and a biography of the American landscape and America’s heritage.
The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, a 12-hour presentation, will air for six consecutive evenings beginning Sunday, September 27 on PBS.
ARAMARK is offering a special America’s Best Idea lodging package which includes: Standard lodging for 2 nights at Far View Lodge inside Mesa Verde NP; seats for 2 on a half-day ranger-guided bus tour of Mesa Verde's ancient sites and cliff dwellings (includes Cliff Palace) and a full DVD set of Ken Burns' "The National Parks: America's Best Idea.
