Mesa Verde National Park fire management staff hopes to conduct a small pile burn in the next week or two. The burn will take place in Morefield Canyon south of Morefield Campground and the main park entrance road near the tunnel. The objective of this burn is to consume the existing accumulation of brush.
The material to be burned is the result of fuel reduction work completed near the park entrance in the past few years. The pile will be ignited early one morning and monitored as it burns. The pile may continue to smolder for up to a week depending on weather conditions.
The burn will only take place when optimum weather and smoke dispersal parameters are met. For further information concerning this planned controlled burn, please contact Brad Harris, acting Mesa Verde Fire Management Officer at 970-529-5066.
