Lincoln Memorial

Transcript

Abraham Lincoln the Man Hello, I’m ranger Brad Berger for the national parks.

In this segment we will discuss the life and times of President Abraham Lincoln. His personal story resonates here at the Lincoln Memorial; this titan of our national heritage grew up as a poor boy on the frontier. A strong, determined worker on the farm and also in the classroom, young Lincoln read books by candlelight at night after long days at school or a hard day’s labor in the fields. His love for knowledge honed the raw young into a formidable package of intellectual and physical strength. Known as “The Rail-splitter” Lincoln’s work followed him throughout first a career in law then a political career spanning from the Illinois state senate all the way to the nation’s capital. This quality endeared himself greatly to the common man; a plain speaker for plain folks. Abraham Lincoln was a man who rose from humble beginnings, a laborer, used to hard physical work, who aspired to lead a nation. Lincoln’s is a story truly taken directly from the ideals of the American dream. The power of his words and deeds has echoed through time as people from all walks of life, from all over the world, look to them to this very day. His memorial, a grand reflection of the republican principles of ancient Greece, the origin from which our federal government stems, sheathes a statue to this great yet humble man. The statue of President Lincoln is magnified to embody grand achievements of the poor boy become great man whose strength in leadership proved invaluable during our nation’s defining moment, which sustained our union.
