Mammoth Cave National Park will conducting prescribed fires March 20 and 21, 2012. Because the fires produce smoke that may linger, some areas in the park will be temporarily closed, and some locations adjacent to the park may experience minor smoke-related effects.
"We make sure to get a safety message out prior to the prescribed fires, so the public knows what to expect," said Park Superintendent Patrick Reed. "There could be smoke on some roads and trails, and some areas will be closed to ensure the safety of the firefighters and the public."
Mammoth Cave officials ask travelers to be aware of fire equipment and personnel in the vicinity of the fires. Any persons with health conditions aggravated by smoke should especially avoid areas around the burn sites.
The schedule and associated safety precautions are as follows:
Tuesday, March 20 - Crystal Cave Unit: Flint Ridge Road, Dennison Ferry Road and Dennison Ferry Day Use Area will be closed. Traffic along Park Ridge Road may experience brief delays. Smoke may be visible north and east of the park.
Wednesday, March 21 - Chaumont Unit: residents along Highway 70 and Highway 255 adjacent to the park's southeast boundary may experience some smoke; traffic may be delayed because of smoke.
