Mammoth Cave Seeks Comments on 2008 Fee Changes
(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – July 30, 2007) Superintendent Patrick Reed announced today that the park is seeking comment on proposed fee increases which would take effect in March 2008. The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004 requires that the public have opportunities to participate in the development of or change to a recreation fee established under the Act.
“The intent of the law is clear in that the public must be given opportunities to become involved with the process,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “Here at Mammoth Cave, we welcome public involvement and want to know what our neighbors, visitors and fellow tourism professionals think about our operation.”
“The changes are a result of a comparability study that we are required to do each year,” said Mike Adams, chief of interpretation and fee management. “Most of the changes would increase an adult cave ticket by one to three dollars per ticket. The exception is the Wild Cave Tour, which would increase from $48 per ticket to $60 per ticket. This is still well below what the private sector charges for this kind of adventure activity.”
The proposed cave tour fee increases are as follows:
· Historic Tour (adult) increase from $12.00 to $13.00
· New Entrance (adult) increase from $12.00 to $13.00
· Grand Avenue Tour (adult) increase from $24.00 to $25.00
· Violet City Lantern Tour (adult) increase from $15.00 to $17.00
· Star Chamber Tour (adult) increase from $12.00 to $15.00; (youth) increase from $8.00 to $9.00
· Wild Cave Tour (adult only) increase from $48.00 to $60.00
· Introduction to Caving (adult) increase from $23.00 to $25.00
“Not everything is going up,” added Reed. “At the Maple Spring Group Campground, the horse campsites that do not have water and electric hookups are being reduced from $30 per night to $22 per night. And for folks who want to take more than one cave tour, we have instituted a second-tour discount.”
The $3/ticket second-tour discount applies to the Historic, New Entrance, Frozen Niagara, and Mammoth Passage tours.
NPS Director’s Order 75A states: “The Service recognizes that the present and future welfare of the national park system depends in large measure on the public's support of the way the Service manages the parks. The public will have a greater appreciation of, and support for, our management if they recognize that we seek, and are receptive to, their involvement in the important decisions that are made.”
To comment on the above fee changes, please contact the park in writing at Mammoth Cave National Park, P.O. Box 7, Mammoth Cave, KY 42259, or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The comment period ends August 20, 2007.
