MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. April 2, 2014 – Go Wild! – for hiking, horseback riding, biking, camping, canoeing and cave tours at Mammoth Cave National Park during National Park Week, April 19 through 27, 2014. To get the celebration going, the park will offer free Discovery cave tours on April 19 and 20. "The theme for National Park Week this year is 'Go Wild' and it certainly is a good fit at Mammoth Cave," said Russell Runge, acting superintendent at Mammoth Cave NP.

"The trails, the rivers, and the cave all beckon travelers and local folks alike to check this place out for themselves. Two special events offering nature walks, displays and workshops will help you get outside and enjoy the Kentucky springtime."

Free Discovery cave tours are offered are on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20. Visitors will need to pick up their free Discovery Tour tickets at the visitor center ticket office between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. CT, and then walk to the Historic Entrance to begin their tour. Being a self-guided cave tour, the Discovery Tour gives visitors the freedom to travel at a brisk walk or a slow stroll. Visitors will navigate the steep hill to and from the cave entrance, as well as 64 steps into and out of the cave. Allow at least 30 minutes for the tour, ¾-mile round trip from the visitor center. Ranger guides are stationed along the route inside the cave to answer questions.

WNS was found in Mammoth Cave in winter 2012-13. Park staff are taking precautions to minimize the spread of WNS fungus from Mammoth Cave. All participants on cave tours must walk across bio-security mats to clean footwear immediately following the conclusion of their tour.
