(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – November 20, 2007) December marks the end of the season for certain services at Mammoth Cave National Park:  Maple Springs Group Campground, and the river ferry service at Houchins Ferry.

The ferry boat at Houchins Ferry will operate through Saturday, December 1, closing at the end of the shift at 6:00 p.m.  The Maple Springs Group Campground will be closed from December 1, 2007, through February 29, 2008.  Both will reopen in March 2008.

Though the group campground will close during the winter months, other campsites are available throughout the year and a portion of the park’s main campground will remain open.

“This year we are going to keep one loop of the Mammoth Cave Campground open during the winter months, as well as the picnic area,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed.  “We expect to see mostly self-contained recreational vehicles in the campground, which are not affected by the weather.  This will be strictly first-come, first-served; no reservations.”

Campsites are also available during the winter at Houchins Ferry Campground, near Brownsville.   Backcountry campsites north of Green River are open year round.

Green River Ferry continues in daily operation year round, 6:00 a.m. to 9:55 p.m. Central Time.
