(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – February 29, 2008) The Maple Springs Group campground and Houchins Ferry will open for the season this weekend. The campground will open Saturday, March 1; Houchins Ferry will begin spring operation on Sunday, March 2. Other park campgrounds and the picnic area remained open through the winter months.
“In the past we would be announcing that the main Mammoth Cave campground would be opening this weekend, too,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed, “but it’s been open all winter. We kept it open thinking RVs would use it. Surprisingly, it was the tent campers who stayed with us. Use was light, but we expect more next winter as word spreads that we will stay open.”
Maple Springs campsites are designed for groups of up to 24 people, and four of the sites accommodate campers with horses. The reservation period for Maple Springs is March through November.
Sites at the Mammoth Cave campground, near the visitor center, are available by reservation May 15 through September 15, and on first-come, first-served basis the rest of the year.

Houchins Ferry, near Brownsville, is a car ferry across Green River. It operates daily from 10:15 a.m. to 6 p.m., March through November.
