(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – April 23, 2007) Superintendent Patrick Reed announced today that the Green River Ferry will be closed for repair Monday, April 30 through Friday, May 4, to overhaul the ferryboat’s hydraulic system.
“The hydraulic system on the ferry is about twelve years old,” said Reed. “That’s a considerable amount of wear and tear. Recently, it developed a leak, which we’ve been able to contain on the boat. It’s time for an overhaul.”
The park has contracted with Premier Hydraulic Services of Louisville for the repairs. The hydraulic motor and pump will be removed from the ferryboat and transported out of the park for repair.
“Green River Ferry will not run at all on Monday, so we can give the contractor an early start,” said Mitchel Cline, park foreman for road and trails who oversees ferry operation. “We hope to have it up and running before the weekend.”
Operation of Houchins Ferry will be extended to 6:00 a.m. to 9:55 p.m. while Green River Ferry is out of commission.
