The Friends of Mammoth Cave National Park will hold the annual 2012 Walk In The Park event on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. This year's Walk will feature three activities. The first option will be a four-mile walk on the Mammoth Cave Railroad Hike and Bike Trail called the Hike & Bike Trail Trek. The second option will be a Ranger-led activity on the Heritage Trail, a ¼-mile board walk, called the Roll and Stroll (for those who need a more level surface, use motorized equipment, or moms with strollers). The third option will be a more rugged outing, the Big Woods Hike, to a section of virgin timber on the north side of the park.
"The Walk in the Park event has become a wonderful tradition at the Park and it's a perfect time of year for everyone to enjoy the great fall weather and the beauty of the park," said Acting Superintendent Bruce Powell. "We look forward to a great turn out of area residents and visitors alike."
Participants should register at www.friendsofmammothcave.org. On-site registration will also be available beginning at 9:00 a.m. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. All proceeds help fund projects and programs for Mammoth Cave National Park. Donations are tax deductible. Refreshments will be provided and t-shirts will be available on-site for $10.
Participants should meet at the Mammoth Cave Hotel parking area for check-in, registration, and departures. If the Mammoth Cave ferry is closed due to low or high water, Big Woods hikers should meet at the Maple Springs parking area at 10:00 a.m.
