Mammoth Cave Campgrounds and Picnic Area Reopen March 1; Houchins Ferry on March 4
(MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK – February 26, 2007) The Mammoth Cave campground, Maple Springs Group campground, and the picnic area will open for the season on March 1, 2007. Houchins Ferry will begin spring operation on Sunday, March 4.
“There are so many different ways to enjoy the park,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “Camping, picnicking, hiking, cave tours, as well as just driving through the park. The campgrounds are in superb condition. Two of the three shelters in the picnic area may be reserved; one is open-air and one is enclosed. I invite everyone to come out and have some fun in the park.”
Houchins Ferry, near Brownsville, is a car ferry across Green River. It operates daily from 10:15 a.m. to 6 p.m., March through November.
The Mammoth Cave campground, near the visitor center, is open for first-come, first-served campers from March 1 through May 15, and September 16 through the end of November; campsites may be reserved May 16 through September 15. Reservations may be made now for the summer season.
Maple Springs campsites are designed for groups of up to 24 people, and four of the sites accommodate campers with horses. The reservation period for Maple Springs is March through November.
To make campground, picnic shelter, or cave tour reservations, call 877/444-6777, or go online at www.recreation.gov.
The Houchins Ferry campground and the backcountry campsites are open year round. Backcountry campsites require a free permit which may be obtained at the visitor center.
