(MAMMOTH CAVE, Kentucky - September 12, 2012) A final rule that establishes a special regulation for bicycle use on designated trails at Mammoth Cave National Park was printed in the Federal Register today, September 12, 2012. The final rule, which addresses public comment on the proposed rule, can be viewed at

The regulation designates four bicycle routes within the park to address the interest and demand of the visiting public for bicycling opportunities without compromising the National Park Service's mandate "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life" in the park.

The regulation implements portions of the park's Comprehensive Trail Management Plan and satisfies National Park Service general regulations that require a special regulation be promulgated to allow off-road bicycle use on routes outside of developed areas. The regulation allows bicycle use on a new Connector Trail in the vicinity of Maple Springs; a new Big Hollow Trail in the hilly country of the park north of the Green River; the Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike & Hike Trail; and the White Oak Trail.

The regulation takes effect October 12, 2012.
