Drought and High Temperatures

An extended period without rainfall, coupled with triple-digit temperatures, has resulted in the following conditions in Mammoth Cave National Park:

All Park ferries are closed due to low water conditions in Green River. Operation of Green River Ferry and Houchin Ferry will resume when the river rises enough for safe operation of the ferries. For current ferry information, call 270.758.2166.

All fires are banned north of Green River in the park. This includes Maple Springs Group Campground and all backcountry campsites. The ban will continue until further notice while high fire risk conditions continue. More...

An Air Pollution Advisory has been issued for the Park. Levels of ozone measured at the park, resulting from hot, sunny, dry conditions, pose a threat to the health of park visitors and employees. These conditions may continue over the weekend and into next week. Park officials advise that visitors, as well as area residents, may wish to refrain from strenuous outdoor activities, until air pollution levels have dropped below the National Ambient Air Quality Standard.
