Map of the SOPN Inventory & Monitoring Network

Lyndon B. Johnson NHP is a member of the Southern Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (SOPN) in the park service wide Inventory and Monitoring program. The SOPN consists of eleven NPS units in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. The mission of the Inventory and Monitoring Program is to coordinate baseline natural resources inventories and develop long-term monitoirng using ecological indicators to assist with the management of park natural resources.

The SOPN parks were established primarily for cultural reasons, but they all still contain significant natural resources. To accomplish the goals of the Inventory and Monitoring Program, the SOPN, with the assistance of researchers and subject matter experts, is conducting inventories and is in the process of selecting key indicators of ecosystem health, also known as "vital signs".
