Conservation Internship Program

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is actively recruiting for energetic, committed young adults who are interested in a career with a federal land agency for the Conservation Internship Program. The internship program recruits young adults to work at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park to learn skills, contribute to meaningful park projects, and create experiences that will make them marketable in a career with a public land agency. Interns support resource management projects, work alongside rangers in the visitor center, assist with educational programs, create interpretive projects, and complete important facility management projects. The program is administered in partnership with Conservation Legacy, an organization committed to fostering conservation service in support of communities and ecosystems.
 

Currently, the park is offering two internship positions. The Park will select candidates for the following opportunities:

 

Record Keeping Intern

Stewards in partnership with Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park are seeking an intern who will help build capacity to provide information, preserve historic data, and assist in the development of digital records.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Become familiar with Record and Electronic Information Management (REIM) system, as well as Directors Order 11 and the Disposition Schedule for the National Park Service.

  • Participate in the Record-keeping work group to assess and realign current files assimilate into the proper format and in accordance with the guidelines.

  • Prepare, scan, and electronically file the storehouse of current records document.

  • Work with hard copy maps, photos, and files to scan and enter them into database.

Intern will receive a living stipend of $630/week. The position is also eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $3,247.50 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program. The intern will also qualify for Direct Hire Authority. Direct Hire Authority allows students who excel in their internships and meet any other job-specific education or training requirements to be hired without competition into permanent positions within the National Park Service and other select bureaus of the Department of the Interior for which they are qualified.
 
 

Community Volunteer Ambassador

The position position will start on Monday, February 6th, 2023, and run for 50 weeks. Intern will receive a living stipend of $500/week.

Community Volunteer Ambassadors (CVAs) support Volunteer-in-Parks programs at National Park Service sites nationwide. The Community Volunteer Ambassador Program was developed to support NPS sites in connecting with their local communities through service and to provide young adults with a professional development opportunity within the National Park Service. CVAs provide capacity for NPS sites to establish community partnerships, develop new volunteer opportunities, and build volunteer program resources.

The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,495.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program. The intern will also qualify for Direct Hire Authority. Direct Hire Authority allows students who excel in their internships and meet any other job-specific education or training requirements to be hired without competition into permanent positions within the National Park Service and other select bureaus of the Department of the Interior for which they are qualified.
 
 

Requirements for All Positions

Eligible applicants must meet the requirements outlined in the job descriptions and must:

  • Be a US citizen
  • Be at least 18 years of age at start of internship
  • Be willing to complete a state and federal background investigation

NPS Experienced Services Program

The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to connect experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support.
 

Interpretive Exhibit Project Assistant

This position will serve as project manager to lead the coordination between Harper’s Ferry Center, internal park staff, and the contractor on two contracts for Intepretive planning and design for for the Texas White House project to include the interior of the Texas White House and Hangar Visitor Center.

This position is currently funded for an estimate of 52 weeks.
 
 

Records Management Specialist

This position will serve as a Records Management Specialist for Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, providing expert advice and guidance to park staff. The position will assess current recordkeeping practices, establish revised file structures, and support staff in prioritizing and implementing migration of key park records.

This position is currently funded for an estimate of 42 weeks.

Americorps Stewards VISTA

Volunteers In Service To America

Join Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and its partners on their efforts to inspire the youth through outdoor education programs inspired by the landscape of the Texas Hill Country and its history.

The VISTA will work with the park in expanding partnerships with local schools and community organizations to build community engagement and education programming throughout the Texas Hill Country, including Austin and San Antonio metro areas. Duties include: Work with staff to develop and improve Lyndon B. Johnson NHP’s education programs. Expand Lyndon B. Johnson NHP’s education opportunities throughout the Texas Hill Country. Work with community groups such as youth mentoring programs and schools to present education programs. Expand outreach and education programs by creating new partnerships.
