Lowell, MA - Lowell National Historical Park is leading an exciting walking tour of Lowell in Dickens' Lowell. In addition the park is waiving museum fees at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum June 9, 2012 in recognition of "National Get Outdoors Day.  Participants from federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the recreation industry are again teaming up to host the 5th annual National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun at sites across the nation. On Saturday, June 9, 2012, these diverse partners will offer opportunities for American families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities.

The 30 minute Dickens' Lowell walking tour will visit the sites that would have been familiar to Charles Dickens, who visited the city in 1842 on his world tour. So impressed was he of Lowell, that a whole chapter of American Notes was devoted to the city. This summer, the Dickens' Lowell walking tour allows visitors to walk the very same streets and see the same sites Dickens' himself saw over 150 years ago. Afterward, a visit to the Boott Cotton Mills Museum and Boott Gallery you can see the exhibit "Charles Dickens in Massachusetts" which highlights Charles Dickens complete American tour. Artifacts from area and international museums are together for the first time in one location to tell the story of his extraordinary visit.


Dickens' Lowell begins at the park Visitor Center, 246 Market Street (parking at 304 Dutton Street parking lot). While there, information is also available about many other park offerings and cultural attractions in the City. The Boott Cotton Mills Museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm at 115 John Street.
