2020 Virtual Dark Sky Festival

Friday through Saturday, August 14 - 15, 2020
Join us in celebrating all that is out of this world at Lassen's first virtual Dark Sky Festival. There will be no on-site events in 2020 due to COVID-19 response, however you can still explore from your own spot under the night sky.

Ask a NASA Astrobiologist

Friday, August 14 • 10 - 10:30 am
Join us for a Facebook Watch party in which astrobiologists Dr. David DesMarais and Dr. Niki Parenteau from the NASA Ames Research Center will answer visitor-submitted questions. The video will be pre-recorded, however a park ranger and possibly* either/both presenters will be in attendance to answer questions via live chat.

Ask an Amateur Astronomer

Saturday, August 15 • 2 - 2:30 pm
Join us for a Facebook Watch party in which Dave Schlom, host of the North State Public Radio Podcast Blue Dot will answer visitor-submitted questions. The video will be pre-recorded, however a park ranger and possibly* Mr. Schlom will be in attendance to answer questions via live chat.

*We will confirm whether the presenters will be attending the Facebook Watch parties as soon as we're able.

Explore the Night with the Junior Ranger Night Explorer Booklet

Kids ages 5 to 12 can complete the Junior Ranger Night Explorer book:

  • From home and earn a digital high five.
  • In the park on 8/14 and 8/15 and earn a Junior Ranger Night Explorer patch.
  1. Print a copy of the booklet at home and bring it with you or pickup a booklet at a park visitor center*.
  2. Complete the booklet.
  3. Share your completed booklet with a ranger at a park visitor center* to receive your free patch.

*Rangers will be available to distribute booklets and award patches outside the Loomis Museum and Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center between 10 am and 4 pm on Friday, August 14 and Saturday, August 15. The booklet must be completed and submitted by 4 pm on Sunday to earn a patch; the park will not be able to mail patches for booklets submitted after this time.
