UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA JAN 13 TO FEB 24

BOULDER CITY, Nevada. – The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 6 to Feb. 24

Ranger Chat: Outdoor Fun-A Child’s Nature Perspective, Jan 13-14

Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 13 and 14 to learn about a variety of ways children can learn about Lake Mead National Recreation Area and get in touch with nature. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

 

Fee Free Day, Jan 15

Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 15 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply.

 

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, Jan 15

Join Lake Mead rangers in downtown Las Vegas at 10 a.m. Jan. 15 as they join the community in celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the 36th annual birthday parade. The 2018 theme is “Living the Dream – Building a Bridge to Unity.” The parade begins at Fourth Street and Gass Avenue and travels north on Fourth Street to Ogden.

 

Ranger Chat: The Mojave Desert: A Magical Land, Jan 20-21

Stop by the Lake Mead Visitor Center at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 20 and 21 to learn about this vibrant desert home. From the desert bighorn sheep found in the rugged mountains to the smallest beavertail cactus, life is abundant and thriving in what many think is a barren landscape. BBSC Lake Mead Marathon, Jan 21

Over 600 athletes will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area Jan. 21 for the BBSC Lake Mead Marathon. The run begins at Boulder Beach and continues on the River Mountains Loop Trail. The race includes a marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K. For more information on this permitted event, visit www.bbscrun.com/lakemeadrun.

 

Ranger Chat: National Parks -Treasures of the Land, Jan 27-28

Join a park ranger at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center to learn about America’s National Parks. Come ask questions about these iconic parks and our own Lake Mead National Recreation Area. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

Ranger Hike: Fisherman’s Trail, Feb 9

Join a ranger at 9 a.m. Feb. 9 at Katherine Landing for a guided hike through granite hills and sand dunes to a picturesque beach. This easy two-mile hike will have views of the Katherine Landing Marina, Newberry Mountains and Davis Dam. For more information and to make a reservation, call 702-293-8970.

 

Ranger Hike: St. Thomas – A Town Revealed, Feb 10

Join a ranger and volunteers on Feb. 10 and walk back in time to the days before the waters of Lake Mead covered the small farming community of St. Thomas. Join a ranger at Katherine Landing at 9 a.m. Feb. 10 for a guided hike on the Lakeview Trail. This moderately strenuous, 2.5 mile-hike provides opportunities to take in mountainous landscape with views of the harbor, Lake Mohave and Telephone Cove. Saints and Sinners Half Marathon, Feb 17

Over 700 athletes will be participating in the Saints and Sinners Half Marathon Feb. 17. The race includes a half marathon, relay and fun run along Historic Railroad Trail and Boulder Beach. For more information on this permitted event, visit saintsandsinnershalf.com.

Volunteer Program: Sahara Mustard Pull Feb 24

Volunteers are needed to help preserve rare and endangered plant species at Lake Mead. Volunteers will remove invasive plants that threaten native species from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 24. Join a ranger to learn about Sahara Mustard and how it impacts plant ecosystems. Volunteers will travel by boat to a selected cove to help remove this noxious plant. Volunteers must be able to bend, stoop and kneel while pulling Sahara Mustard. Space is limited to 12 people. Ranger Program: Chasing the Stars, Feb 24

Join rangers and the Astronomical Society at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Boulder Beach Amphitheater to learn about the night sky and to discuss the impacts of light pollution on national parks. Telescope viewing will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tips will be shared about how to protect and view the night sky. For more information, call 702-293-8990.
