SATURATION PATROL SCHEDULED FOR AUG. 25 AT COTTONWOOD COVE RD, SEARCHLIGHT

LAS VEGAS - Park rangers at Lake Mead will be conducting a traffic safety saturation patrol on Saturday, Aug. 25 2012 from approximately 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. in the area of Cottonwood Cove, NV. A primary focus will be placed on the Cottonwood Cove road from Searchlight to the Marina.

Rangers will be conducting this patrol in partnership with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol. Officers from all of these agencies will be focusing their patrols in the area looking for safety violations to include: failure to wear seatbelts, speeding, aggressive driving, failure to comply with Nevada's Move Over Law, and operating under the influence.

Each year during peak summer visitation times this area reports a high numbers of traffic accidents related to drivers operating under the influence, operating too fast for road conditions, and in excess of posted speed limits. So far this year in this area there have already been two separate vehicle rollover accidents, with one of them resulting in a fatality. Speed, alcohol, and seatbelt use are common factors associated with traffic accidents in the park.

"Our goal is to keep our roads safe for all of our visitors. Our partners feel the same and we find tremendous benefit and have seen great results when we combine our limited resources to make an impact in an area of concern like Cottonwood Cove road, said Deputy Chief Adam Kelsey."

As a reminder, drivers in Nevada have certain responsibilities when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle making use of flashing lights. These apply to all types of emergency vehicles including tow trucks. (NRS 484B.607)

In the absence of direction by a peace officer, the driver of a vehicle approaching a stopped emergency vehicle must:

Decrease the vehicle speed to a speed that is reasonable and proper and less than the posted speed limit.

Proceed with caution.

Be prepared to stop; and

If possible, drive in a lane that is not adjacent to the lane in which the emergency vehicle is stopped unless the roadway, traffic, weather or other conditions make doing so unsafe or impossible.

More information on traffic regulations can be found at: http://www.dmvnv.com/dltrafficlaws.htm

The penalties for these violations can range from $100.00 up to $5000, maximum 6 months in jail, and up to five years probation.
