UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA DEC. 4 TO 27
BOULDER CITY, Nevada. –The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Dec. 4 to 27.
Desert Bighorn Sheep Discovery, Book Signing , Dec 4
Join a park ranger, Western National Parks Association staff and special guest and author,Mark Jorgensen at a book signing event at the Lake Mead Visitor Center 3 p.m. Dec. 4. Mark is the former superintendent of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and author of Desert Bighorn Sheep: Wilderness Icon.For more information, please call 702-293-8990.
Make S'mores at Park Headquarters, Dec 5
Join park rangers in making s'mores at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area park headquarters, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, during the Boulder City Santa's Electric Night Parade at 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5. The "S'more Making Team" will pass out hot chocolate, marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate. The parade kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and includes National Park Service vehicles and a special float with other federal and state agencies. Call 702-293-8990, for more information.
Ranger Program: Painting Nature- The Artistry of the Desert, Dec 5
Ranger and artist, Mindy Grabko, will be leading a watercolor class, painting the eclectic Gambels Quailat the Lake Mead Visitor Center 8:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 5. There is a $25 per person fee to cover the cost of materials and refreshments.Space is limited. For more information and to register please call 702-293-8990.
Laughlin/Bullhead City Half Marathon and 5K Dec 5
Around 1,000 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area for the Laughlin Half Marathon and 5K Dec. 5. The course travels along Davis Dam Road south of Katherine Landing. Parade of Lights Dec 5
Around 25 boats adorned with lights and holiday decorations will participate in the annual Lake Mead Boat Owner's Association's Parade of Lights Dec. 5. Decorated boats will be on display at Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Visitors can vote for their favorite decorations. At 6:30 p.m., the boats will depart the marinas and parade across the Boulder Basin. Visitors can watch the departure from the marinas or view the parade from Boulder Beach. Lake Mead Visitor Center Holiday Open House, Dec 12
Join rangers at the Lake Mead Visitor Center for cookies and hot beverages 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 12. Enjoy the Desert Discovery Center and ranger chats throughout the day. There will be discounted items in the visitor center park store during the open house. Call 702-293-8990 for more information.
The Dock of Lights Dec 12
Visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy hot chocolate and stroll along the dock to see boats decorated with holiday lights at the annual Dock of Lights at Callville Bay 7 p.m. Dec. 12. BBSC Hoover Dam Marathon Dec 12
Nearly 700 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area along the River Mountains Loop and Historic Railroad trails 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 12. The Hoover Dam Marathon will start and finish at Boulder Beach. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Road and additional traffic at Boulder Beach. The race course is the mulit-use trails of the River Mountain Loop Trail and the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail. Ranger Chat: Endangered Species, Dec 13
The Mojave Desert is home to a variety of species that are considered threatened or endangered.Join a ranger at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 13 to learn about the threatened desert tortoise, the peregrine falcon and the Las Vegas bearpoppy, which are found in very limited numbers in the park. Evening Program: Campfire Stories, Songs, Dec 19
