Construction Will Lead to Temporary, Partial Closure Of Historic Railroad Trail
BOULDER CITY, Nevada – The tunnels along the Historic Railroad Trail within Lake Mead National Recreation Area will undergo repairs Oct. 15-Nov.15.
Starting Oct. 15, crews will work in one tunnel at a time to remove loose rocks and repair cracks and missing shotcrete to improve the integrity of the structures.
Construction will occur Monday through Thursday. On these days, visitors will be able to hike along the trail from the National Park Service or Bureau of Reclamation trailheads to the tunnel that is under construction.
The full trail will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and during federal holidays. All races and ranger programs scheduled during this time will still occur.
The former railroad grade provides panoramic views of Lake Mead, overlooking the Boulder Basin, as well as many opportunities for visitors to see the railroad route that ran from Boulder City to Hoover Dam from 1931 to 1961. The project will preserve this cultural resource for future generations to discover and enjoy.
The nearly $150,000 project is funded through cyclic maintenance and is expected to last through Nov. 15. The contractor is Site Work Solutions from Denver.
