On July 14, 1897, the SS Excelsior landed in San Francisco with over 750,000 dollars worth of gold. Three days later, the SS Portland landed in Seattle with a huge amount of gold; over two tons! The arrival of these two ships signaled the start of the Klondike Gold Rush.
