Park Seeks New Keweenaw Heritage Sites

(Calumet, MI) The National Park Service and the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission are pleased to announce that they are accepting applications for membership in the Keweenaw Heritage Sites program. Application packets are available at the park's website (, and at park headquarters, located at 25970 Red Jacket Road in Calumet.

Following an intensive grassroots effort, and rigorous study by the National Park Service (NPS), Congress established Keweenaw National Historical Park (NHP) in 1992 to preserve the nationally significant resources and "to interpret the historic synergism between the geological, aboriginal, sociological, cultural, technological, and corporate forces that relate to the story of copper on the Keweenaw." In an effort to preserve and interpret the vast historic resources of the region, Congress intended the park to operate on a partnership model, where the private sector and local public agencies would work with the NPS and the Advisory Commission. For twenty years, the park has included a set of partner sites that play an integral role in these activities.

Keweenaw Heritage Sites, which embody the essence of that partnership model, are physical places that contain significant cultural and/or natural resources; make a unique contribution to the story of copper mining in the Keweenaw, are open to the public; and possess the organizational and management structure necessary to partner with the NPS and the Advisory Commission in support of the park's legislated purposes. Today, 19 Keweenaw Heritage Site partner organizations manage 26 sites throughout Upper Michigan's Copper Country as part of this program. The park is exploring the potential for other organizations to participate in this vital aspect of its partnership activities.

Keweenaw NHP will accept applications through June 30, 2013. A review committee comprised of Keweenaw Heritage Site representatives, members of the Advisory Commission, and NPS staff will evaluate the applications during a 90-day review period. The evaluation may include, but is not limited to, a review of the completed application, consideration of how well an applicant meets the minimum criteria, a site visit, and a personal interview with board members and the site manager (where applicable). New Keweenaw Heritage Sites will be notified in October, and announced to the public at the Advisory Commission's quarterly meeting on October 15, 2013.
