The staff at Jewel Cave National Monument is excited to host a variety of special programs on Friday, November 25 as an alternative to Black Friday shopping. A Park Ranger will lead a ¼-mile nature hike on the Roof Trail at 11 a.m. The hike is followed by an interpretive talk on cave exploration at 1:30 p.m. by special guest Chris Pelczarski; Chris is a volunteer cave explorer for Jewel Cave. Additionally, you can OptOutside by heading inside the cave, as the Monument will offer additional cave tours on Friday and Saturday.
Jewel Cave is taking part in the OptOutside initiative, which encourages families to spend time outdoors together rather than in stores on Black Friday. Many other National Park Service sites around the country are participating, and several other public lands are also waiving admission fees in honor of the day. Jewel Cave encourages everyone to OptOutside by visiting their local, state, or national parks and Find Your Park!
Chief of Interpretation Bradley Block states, “The Monument continues to celebrate the 2016 NPS Centennial with additional programs and special events. If visitors are not able to OptOutside on Black Friday, we still hope outdoor enthusiasts will explore their local public lands over the holiday weekend. Thanksgiving weekend is a great time to explore the beautiful Black Hills with family and friends.”
Jewel Cave is open daily during the late fall season from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with two different cave tour options and one monthly Wild Caving Tour. Beginning Monday, November 28, tours will only be offered Friday through Sunday. Jewel Cave is lucky to have a strong volunteer contingent beginning in December, and our staff hopes to offer additional programs and cave tours once the volunteers are trained.
