2018 Historic Jamestowne Special Events

The following are special events scheduled for 2018 for all of Colonial National Historical Park including Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield.


Jan 15 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday (Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield). Free entrance to National Parks and other Federal sites throughout the country. Colonial National Historical Park, Jamestown, VA, (757)856-1200 and Yorktown, VA (757) 898-2410.

April 1 - Easter Morning Sunrise Service, 7:00 am - Let all the People gather at the foot of the Cross on Historic Jamestown Island. Sunrise service led by Local Clergy. MUSIC! SCRIPTURE! PRAYER! Plan on a 5-10 minute walk from the parking area. Dress comfortable and bring a lawn chair. Sponsored by Williamsburg Clergy, in cooperation with the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia. April 21 National Park Service Junior Ranger Day (Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield) Special activities for children will enable them to earn a "National" Junior Ranger Badge. Colonial National Historical Park, Yorktown, VA (757) 898-2410; Free Entrance. Family-friendly activities for all ages will be presented by students from Jamestown High School’s Rho Kappa Honor Society between 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. No reservations are needed for the following:

  • * Living History Characters will be roving the historic site throughout the day answering visitors questions about life at Jamestown during the seventeenth-century. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • * Children's Games and dancing, [outside on historic site] ongoing from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • * Mock Archaeology Dig Box, [outside on historic site] ongoing from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • *Hands-on Craft Demonstrations for children inside the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center will be ongoing from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • * 45-minute guided walking tours of the historic site allowing visitors to meet various living history characters imparting their personal stories about daily life at Jamestown during the 17 th- century:

  • * 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. [Total walking distance about 300 yards]

  • * Theodore Roosevelt will be portrayed by Mr. Bill Rose at 1:30 p.m. After the program he will be informally interacting with children, parents, and other visitors.


May 5th - Civil War at Jamestown (Dave Riggs, 1100 and 1330, powerpoint and tour).The Civil War will be the focus of a special tour at Historic Jamestowne. The walking tour will take visitors through the colonial town site and present insight into the importance of Jamestowne Island during the Civil War by noted authority David Riggs. This interpretive program marking the 157th anniversary of the Civil War begins at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. inside Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center. Following each tour, a book signing will take place at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center by author David Riggs.David F. Riggs is retired from the National Park Service. He served for 38 years, which included 14 years at Jamestown. His publications include the book Embattled Shrine: Jamestown in the Civil War.

May 5 - Yorktown, Va. – The Colonial Parkway will be closed to motor vehicles between Williamsburg and Jamestown on Saturday, May 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the 21st annual Pedal the Parkway event. Pedal the Parkway is family friendly plus a perfect recreational activity for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Pedal the Parkway is free, open to the public, and will take place rain or shine. Come join in the fun! This year’s event will again feature helmet giveaways for youngsters at the Jamestown end. Total length of this section of the parkway is about 8 miles but folks can turn around anytime for a shorter distance. Persons seeking longer distances may ride multiple laps. Runners and walkers are also welcome. The rest stop at Archer’s Hope will offer refreshments. Limited parking is available at Jamestown Settlement and Newport Avenue parking lots in Williamsburg. Pedal the Parkway is one of the many events held during Bike Month in the greater Williamsburg area. May 12th - Jamestown Day.(Historic Jamestowne). Special programs and tours commemorate the landing of the first settlers at Jamestown in 1607. Colonial National Historical Park, Jamestown, VA, (757) 898-2410 or (757) 856-1200, Entrance Fee. Jointly sponsored by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia. Schedule subject to change.

July 25- First Assembly Commemoration. Join Governor Sir George Yeardley and Secretary John Pory for the first meeting of the General Assembly to discuss and debate the laws affecting the colony.This interactive program will take place a short distance from the Memorial Church at 12:30 pm and 3:00pm, which was constructed in the early 20th century to protect and memorialize the location of the original church where the first Assembly was convened 399 years ago.

July 29- Historic Jamestowne Commemorates "First Assembly Day". Living history interpreters will reflect on the significance of the first Assembly in 1619 and its impact on the residents of the Virginia Colonyat 10:00 a.m.,12:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m., inside the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center Theater. September 15th - Bacon's Rebellion. CANCELED . An evening walking tour will relate the details of Bacon’s Rebellion as they occurred at Jamestown, including a symbolic burning of the town site. October 13th- Historic Jamestowne Celebrates Virginia Archaeology Month. Explore archaeology and Jamestown’s history through a variety of tours, activities, and encounters. Colonial National Historical Park, Jamestown, VA, (757) 898-2410 or (757) 856-1200.


October 27-Tales of Hallows Eve. Hear actual eyewitness accounts of conjurations and witchcraft from 17th-century Virginia, brought to life through character interpretations.6:45pm - 7:45 pm.Phone 757-856-1250 for ticket information.

December 15-“At Christmas Be Mery”: A Special Evening at Historic Jamestowne. Join us for this special program offering insights into early-English Christmas traditions. Program begins at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center at 6:00pm and 7:30 pm. Sir George Yeardley, Virginia’s Governor in 1620, invites you to an early-Virginia Christmas celebration complete with a seasonal bonfire, caroling, and firing of the Christmas guns! Fridays at 2 pm. “First Africans Walking Tour” This walking tour of “New Town” will focus on the arrival of the first Africans in Virginia in 1619. Of the nine Africans listed at Jamestown by 1625, only one was identified by name – a woman named Angela. Recent archaeology has investigated the site of where Angela lived and worked. But the story of African Americans at Jamestown goes beyond 1619…This new tour will be offered as a part of weekly programming. Location: Tour begin at the Tercentennial Monument. Free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne.
