Behind the Scenes Tour

See the Garfield home and property as you've never seen it before! This special two-hour tour takes you into rooms in the Garfield house not open to the normal public tour, including the basement and
attic.You'll also explore the windmill, barn, and other outbuildings.Cost is $15.00 per
person. Reservations recommended; please call 440-255-8722. Minimum age is 16. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to climb steps without difficulty.

The Civil War Service and Writings of Ambrose Bierce: Major Battles &Topics of the
Civil War
Lunchtime Speaker Series—A Civil War 150th Anniversary Program

Join James A. Garfield NHS staff and volunteers at Mentor Public Library on the second
Wednesday of each month for a new talk on "Major Battles &Topics of the Civil War!"Ambrose Bierce served much of the war in an Indiana infantry regiment and survived numerous wounds to
become a major American writer after the conflict. Learn more about his military service as well
as his Civil War stories and poems! Program is free of charge; please make a free reservation by calling Mentor Public Library at 440-255-8811. Attendees are invited to bring a lunch to enjoy during the talk.

Naturalization Ceremony

In honor of the recent Fourth of July, visit the site to witness dozens of individuals from
nations across the globe take the oath as America's newest citizens. The Garfield home provides an appropriate and idyllic setting for this uniquely American ceremony.This event planned in partnership with the League of Women Voters, Citizenship & Immigration Services (U.S. Department
of Homeland Security), and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The public is invited to attend this uniquely American event free of charge.

Not to be confused with our popular Behind the Scenes tour, this special tour takes you into several of the rooms of the Garfield home BEHIND the normal public barriers and allows you to see and even handle some of the home's unique artifacts. Always wanted to see further into some of the home's most beautiful rooms? Then Behind the Ropes is the tour for you! Cost is $15.00 per person. Limited space;reservations required. Please call 440-255-8722 for reservations. Minimum age is 16.

Northeast Ohio Civil War Round Table 3rd Annual Speaker Symposium—A Civil War
150th Anniversary Program

Join members of the local Northeast Ohio Civil War Round Table (NEOCWRT) for a free public
symposium featuring speakers discussing various Civil War subjects. This is a perfect way to begin the weekend of our annual Civil War encampment! Thanks to our friends in the NEOCWRT for organizing this program for the third straight year! Everyone is invited to attend this event, held in the visitor center auditorium. Free of charge.

Civil War Encampment—A Civil War 150th Anniversary Program—Fee Free Days!

The 150thanniversary of the Civil War is upon us! Get ready with a weekend encampment on the grounds of President Garfield's home.Learn more about camp life, the experience of battle, and future President James A. Garfield's experiences fighting for the Union. Includes numerous reenactor groups and some live firing demonstrations with blank cartridges.Free of charge.

Garfield Neighborhood Walking Tour

Learn more about the Garfields' life in Mentor with a walking tour of several blocks
immediately east and west of James A. Garfield NHS! Features a "then and now" look at the
Garfield family's neighborhood using historic photos and modern views. Limited space; reservations required.Please call 440-255-8722 for reservations.Must be 16 or older and
able to walk 1.5 miles with no difficulty. Tour lasts 90 minutes to two hours. Cost is $15.00 per person. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

World Ranger Day Commemoration

July 31 is World Ranger Day, an internationally-recognized day to commemorate Park Rangers
killed or injured in the line of duty and to celebrate the work Park Rangers do
to protect the world's natural and cultural resources. Visit us on World Ranger Day to pay tribute
to killed and injured Rangers and also learn more about the kinds of work done
by Rangers across the globe! Free of charge.

Commemoration of the U.S. Coast Guard Birthday

James A.Garfield NHS is proud to mark the birthdays of each armed service, and the U.S.
Coast Guard's birthday is August 4! A table sponsored by the Friends of James A. Garfield NHS will be set up containing information about the history and traditions of the Coast Guard.

Great Geauga County Fair Band Performance on the Lawn

Join the Great Geauga Fair Band on the grounds for an hour of music from President
Garfield's era and a few contemporary tunes for good measure!The band is familiar with many of the marches and patriotic songs of the last 130 years, and you can enjoy them just as the
Garfield family might have: gathered under a beautiful canapé of trees. Feel free to bring lawn chairs, drinking water, and picnic baskets! (Alcoholic beverages are NOT permitted.) RAIN DATE: Saturday, August 8 at 2 p.m. Free of charge.Sponsored by the Friends of James A. Garfield NHS.

relatively new medium during the Civil War. Learn more about the technology of photography and how the Civil War influenced the growth and evolution of this art form! Founder's Day: The National Park Service Birthday—Fee-Free Day!

The National Park Service turns 99 this year! The Service was created by legislation signed by President Woodrow Wilson on August 25, 1916.To celebrate, ALL National Park Service sites will waive entrance fees today!Visit to learn more about James A. Garfield as well as the NPS as we prepare for our centennial in 2016!

National Public Lands Day—A Fee-Free Day!

National Public Lands Day is set aside each year for Americans to reflect on and
celebrate national parks, fish and wildlife refuges, national forests, and
other areas set aside for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. Tour the Garfield home, enjoy the museum exhibits and film, walk the grounds, and learn more than you ever thought possible about Mentor's own President Garfield! Free of charge; no entrance fees charged at any National Park Service sites on Public Lands Day!

Saturday, September 26—1 p.m.
The Funeral of President James A. Garfield

President Garfield's funeral was held in Cleveland 134 years ago today: September 26,
1881.Learn more about what one scholar called "the funeral of the century," an event that was larger even than President Abraham Lincoln's 1865 funeral. This talk will be presented in the visitor center auditorium.Free of charge.

The History of the Garfield Memorial in Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery

President and Mrs. James A. Garfield are interred in a large, beautiful structure in Lake
View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. On this 134th anniversary of the President's funeral, a representative
of Lake View Cemetery will be here to discuss the history of the Garfield Memorial, including the nationwide effort to raise funds to construct it! Free of charge.
