James A. Garfield National Historic Site is excited to invite you to "Picnic in the Park" on International Picnic Day, June 18, 2016, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. National parks across the United States will be encouraging people to go to their nearest national park and picnic in honor of the National Park Service's Centennial.

Be a part of this effort to get as many people into the national parks all at the same time enjoying these special places.Take pictures of yourself and your picnic and post them on social media to compete for virtual awards using the hashtags #picnicinthepark and #findyourpark. Watch social media to see what other people are doing across the country at their "Picnic in the Park". Virtual awards will be given the following week for a variety of categories.

The Garfield site event will include music, family activities, and a national parks game show, so brush up on your NPS trivia! The Garfield home will be open for free, and park rangers will be issuing the new 4th grade pass for FREE to every 4th grader attending. Children will also have the opportunity to earn four different Junior Ranger badges. In addition to our Garfield Junior Ranger badge, we will also be debuting junior ranger books for the NPS Centennial, the Great Lakes, and Historic Preservation.

Here are some tips to make your picnic great! Come prepared by bringing insect repellant, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Know what food you pack.Store chilled foods in coolers with ice packs and store them in the shade and not in a hot car. Put grilled foods on a clean plate.
