Behind the Scenes Tour

See the Garfield home and property as you’ve never seen it before! This special two-hour tour takes you into rooms in the Garfield house not open to the normal public tour, including the basement and attic. You’ll also explore the windmill, barn, and other outbuildings. Cost is $15.00 per person. Limited space; reservations required. Please call 440-255-8722 for reservations. Minimum age is 16. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to climb steps without difficulty.

Join us at Skye the first Tuesday of each month, October-April, for a new Lunch & Lecture program! The year 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Garfield home’s grand re-opening after a major renovation and restoration that took several years to complete. Learn about what was done to the Mentor home two decades ago to preserve it and enhance the visitor experience! Part one of two; part two will be Tuesday, February 6. Hancock the Superb: The Life of Winfield Scott Hancock—Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Era Speaker Series

Join James A. Garfield NHS staff and volunteers at Mentor Public Library on the second Wednesday of each month for a new talk on “Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Era!” Winfield Scott Hancock was a West Point graduate and Mexican-American War veteran before the Civil War. He is now remembered as the Union’s greatest corps commander. In 1880, he ran for President… against James Garfield! Learn more about the life and career of this distinguished American soldier. Warrior to White House: Civil War Veterans as President of the United States—Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Era Speaker Series

Join James A. Garfield NHS staff and volunteers at Mentor Public Library on the second Wednesday of each month for a new talk on “Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Era!” Six Civil War veterans became President in the decades after the war. This program will take a look at those veterans and how their military service impacted their political careers and presidencies. Presidents Day—A Fee-Free Day!

February 19 is Presidents Day, and what better way to celebrate than visiting a presidential home? James A. Garfield NHS will be open for tours of the Garfield home, presidential trivia, kids’ activities, crafts, and more! We might even get a visit from a president or two! The Site will be free of charge today, so come out, learn, and enjoy at the home of Mentor, Ohio’s favorite son: President James A. Garfield!

White House Easter Monday Egg Roll—A Fee-Free Day!

Hosted by First Lady Lucretia Garfield, this kid-friendly day and favorite of the general public takes place on the same day as the Easter Egg Roll at the White House in Washington, D.C.! Games, activities, Easter egg hunts, and the Easter egg roll for kids are all part of this fun day that also commemorates a White House tradition in which President Garfield participated in 1881! Free of charge.

Lucretia Garfield spent much of her post-First Lady life here in Mentor, Ohio, but she also spent many winters in South Pasadena, California. Prelude to Sumter: Leaders & Legacies of the Mexican-American War—Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Era Speaker Series

Join James A. Garfield NHS staff and volunteers at Mentor Public Library on the second Wednesday of each month for a new talk on “Leaders & Legacies of the Civil War Era!” Many of the most famous soldiers on both sides of the Civil War first experienced combat in the 1846-48 Mexican-American War. Learn more about their experiences in Mexico and how they prepared these men to fight each other in the Civil War. National Park Week—Fee-Free Days!

April 14-23 is National Park Week, and all National Park Service sites are free of charge all week! Since James A. Garfield NHS is open Friday-Saturday-Sunday through April 30, the Site will be free of charge on Friday, April 14-Sunday, April 16. Walk the grounds, check out the museum exhibits, watch the film, and take a guided tour of the Garfield home for free!

National Park Week—Fee-Free Day!

April 14-23 is National Park Week, and all National Park Service sites are free of charge all week! Since James A.
