Mt Franklin Fire Basics

The Mount Franklin Fire is now 100% contained. Minnesota wildland fire crews departed on 8/21/2022. An Incident Commander from the Hiawatha National Forest continues to monitor the burn area. All effected trails, campgrounds, and docks are open. Effected cross country camping zones remain closed.

Hazards may still exist. If hiking through the burn area, stay on the trail for your safety. Rock cairns are in place on the Mount Franklin Trail to guide hikers through the burn area. Review the Mt Franklin Fire FAQ for more information.

Acreage: Estimated at 6 acres, (reduced from initial estimates of 11 acres due to active personnel mapping the fire's boundaries. Initial estimates are based on first-responder reports and are often adjusted).
Percent Contained: 100%
Resources Assigned: 

  • NPS wildland fire personnel and park rangers 8/13/22
  • SEAT aircraft on evening of 8/13/22 
    • Dropped five loads of water (approximately 4000 total gallons) 
  • Incident Commander from the Hiawatha National Forest 8/14/22  
  • Wildland fire crew of 10 from Minnesota 8/14/22 (departed 8/21/22)

Fire Management Strategy: Suppress
Cause: The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Investigators are seeking information about an illegal fire and associated camp on the Mount Franklin Trail the evening of August 12 and into the morning of August 13.
