Events & Programs

Will there be any evening programs?

No, evening programs will not be offered this summer.

I was planning a special event in the park this summer. Will those be allowed?

All proposed special events will need to be coordinated through the Special Use Permit process. Details of the event (including # of people attending, location, etc.) will be evaluated using COVID-19 guidance. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Will the Artist-in-Residence Program and Teen Artist Exploration take place this summer?

No, both programs have been cancelled for this summer due to COVID-19. The artists selected for each program will have the opportunity to participate next year.


Isle Royale Resorts: Rock Harbor & Windigo

Is the Rock Harbor Lodge open?

No, the Rock Harbor Lodge is closed this summer with 2 exceptions.

  • The Rock Harbor Dockside Store will be open from July 1 – August 11 from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm daily with a very limited selection of food, camping supplies, and gifts.
  • The gas dock will be open for fuel sales during the same time period.

The remainder of the Rock Harbor Lodge facilities and services are closed; i.e. Lakeside Lodge, Housekeeping Cabins, Gift Shop, Lighthouse Restaurant, Greenstone Grill, Marina (with the exception of fuel sales), fishing charters, sightseeing tours, showers, laundry, and water taxi service.

Is the Windigo Store open this summer?

No, the Windigo Store, Marina, and Camper Cabins are closed for the season.


Transportation & Guide Services

Why is passenger ferry service suspended for 2020?

Each ferry, concession and government operations made decisions in the best interests of visitors and their operation. Due to COVID-19, social distancing restrictions and concerns about COVID-19 spreading to a remote island with limited emergency services, at this time no ferries felt transportation services could run safely and economically.

If I can’t get a seaplane reservation, can I hire a private boat to give me a ride to the park?

No, private boaters are not authorized to provide visitor transportation to the park. All transportation service is required to have a permit or concession contract.

36 CFR 5.3 Business operations - Engaging in or soliciting any business in park areas, except in accordance with the provisions of a permit, contract, or other written agreement with the United States, except as such may be specifically authorized under special regulations applicable to a park area, is prohibited.

Will guided backpacking or SCUBA diving trips be offered this summer?

Yes, some small businesses will offer their services in the park this summer. If you were planning a trip this summer, please contact the service provider directly for more information.


Visitor Centers & Facilities

Are visitor centers open?

As of June 26, 2020, the Houghton, Rock Harbor, and Windigo Visitor Centers will be open. Hours of operation and services will be limited at the island visitor centers. All visitor centers have capacity limits. Visitors are asked to wear face coverings when inside the visitor centers and outside when social distancing is not possible. Visitors should follow social distancing guidelines at all times.

Are the north shore and south shore ranger stations open this summer?

No, the north and south shore ranger stations are not open this summer. Rangers will be making intermittent patrols to these areas throughout the summer.

Will you sell maps and books at the visitor centers?

Yes, Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association will have a selection of items for sale at all 3 visitor centers, including maps.

Q. Will the restrooms be open at Windigo and Rock Harbor?

Yes, restrooms will be open at both Windigo and Rock Harbor. The restrooms in the comfort station at Windigo open on June 26. At Rock Harbor, only the restrooms in the comfort station near the visitor center will be open this summer. They open on July 1. Boaters and seaplane passengers arriving in Rock Harbor before July 1 will need to use the outhouses in the campground.

Will there be potable water at Rock Harbor and/or Windigo?

Yes, there will be potable water at both Rock Harbor and Windigo.

Will showers be open?

No, shower facilities will not be open.

Will laundry be open?

No, laundry facilities will not be open.

Will storage be available for food and gear on the island?

No, storage will not be available. Bring extra food and supplies in case there are delays with your transportation.

Will trash cans or dumpsters be available on the island?

Yes, trash cans will be available at Windigo and a dumpster will be available at Rock Harbor. Please follow Leave No Trace principles and carry out your trash if possible.
