Independence National Historical Park

 

The only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll's ancestor came to Maryland to escape religious persecution in 17th century England. Carroll was educated abroad by the Jesuits and returned to America to a distinguished career as a statesman.
