Labor Day Living History Extravaganza 2013

Add Homestead National Monument of American to your Labor Day Weekend plans. For this three day weekend, August 31-September 2, 2013, the monument will offer a variety of fun living history activities from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at both the Heritage and Education Centers. Learn about life as a pioneer by making butter. Make your own pioneer toy and play pioneer games. Create a cornhusk doll as unique as you are. Wash clothes the old-fashioned way. Make your own candle. Watch as a loom creates works of art. See a printmaker Artist-in-Residence in action on all three days from 1-3 p.m., and learn how to make prints yourself using potatoes. Kids can even add their prints to our potato-print mural!

In addition to the living history and art activities, the monument will offer a unique special program each day. On Saturday, August 31, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. learn about Nebraska’s Grape & Wine Industry from University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Dr. Paul Read. Then on Sunday, September 1, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. watch expert basket weaver Patty Minge demonstrate her craft. Rounding out the weekend of activities will be the first time-ever visit by a cheese maker as Charuth Van Beuzekom turns milk into ricotta cheese on Monday, September 2, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Also, on Monday, September 2 at 2 p.m. come test your spelling prowess at the 4th Annual Old-Fashioned Spelling Bee at the Freeman School. Currently, the Freeman School is open daily from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. After Monday, September 2 the school will only be open upon request.
