Completing, Remembering and Forgetting the Civil War

African American History Month Commemorated at

Homestead National Monument of America

In recognition of African American History Month, Homestead National Monument of America will have a special program on Sunday, February 16 at 2 p.m. at the Education Center with University of Nebraska-Omaha Professor Dr. Fredrick Nielsen. Dr. Nielsen's program is titled "Completing, Remembering, and Forgetting the Civil War".

After the Civil War, the work of peace was, in its way, as difficult as fighting the war itself. After Appomattox, divisive questions remained as the nation began to reconstruct the Union: What was the place of freed slaves? What was the federal government's responsibility to them? How would former Confederate states be readmitted to the Union? In the end, Americans put their country back together by often forgetting why they had fought in the first place. How they rebuilt a broken nation in the 19th Century still shapes the United States in the 21stCentury.

Remember, Homestead National Monument of America has an exciting schedule of events planned for 2014. Keep up with the latest information by following us on Twitter (HomesteadNM) and Facebook (Homestead National Monument of America).
