Prairie Wonders After Dark:

Artist-in-Residence Leads Night Photography Hike

Ever wonder what the prairie looks like after dark, or want to photograph nighttime images? Don’t miss this rare opportunity to do both by visiting Homestead National Monument of America in the evening for a Night Photography Hike with a resident photographer! See the prairie reveal its nighttime gems and learn how to photograph them. Join Angie Gunnoe, Homestead Artist-in-Residence from Columbus, Ohio, for this unique public program on July 20 from 8:30-9:30 p.m., meeting in the Heritage Center parking lot. This is the monument's fifth year of the Artist-in-Residence program, and Gunnoe is one of six artists who were selected this year. There is no registration necessary and the program is free.

articipants on the Night Photography Hike will explore a small portion of the prairie to observe the wonders that appear after dark, and then learn how to capture them with a camera. Special attention will be given to the sea of stars and glittering fireflies that are a truly magical experience. Gunnoe will discuss her work photographing these and other images during her residency at the Monument, as well as tips on photographing nature and low-light scenes. Participants are welcome to bring along a camera with a manual setting and a tripod to try out what they learn during the program. However, supplies are not necessary and all are welcome to simply look and gain inspiration.

"We are excited to welcome a talented group of artists to live and work with us this year. We look forward to learning from them as they share their creativity and passion with us and our visitors. In addition, this night program is a wonderful chance to share a side of the Monument that is rarely seen by the public," stated Homestead's Superintendent Mark Engler.
