An Extravaganza of Living History Activities Offered over Labor Day Weekend

at Homestead National Monument of America

Add Homestead National Monument of American to your Labor Day Weekend plans.For this three day weekend, August 31-September 2, 2013, the monument will offer a variety of fun living history activities from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at both the Heritage and Education Centers.Learn about life as a pioneer by making butter.Make your own pioneer toy and play pioneer games.Create a cornhusk doll as unique as you are.Wash clothes the old-fashioned way.Make your own candle. Watch as a loom creates works of art.Even see a printmaker in action.

In addition to the living history activities, the monument will offer a unique special program each day.On Saturday, August 31, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. learn about Nebraska's Grape & Wine Industry from University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Dr. Paul Read.Then on Sunday, September 1, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. watch expert basket weaver Patty Minge demonstrate her craft.Rounding out the weekend of activities will be the first time-ever visit by a cheese maker as Charuth Van Beuzekom turns milk into ricotta cheese on Monday, September 2, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.Also, on Monday, September 2 at 2 p.m. come test your spelling prowess at the 4th Annual Old-Fashioned Spelling Bee at the Freeman School.Currently, the Freeman School is open daily from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. After Monday, September 2 the school will only be open upon request.

Homestead National Monument of America is a unit of the National Park Service located four miles west of Beatrice, Nebraska or 45 miles south of Lincoln, Nebraska.
