Application Procedure for Historians

Summer Employment Poster

Historians conduct research using primary and secondary sources to produce reports and inventories on specific sites, structures, or technical processes. A degree in architectural history, history of technology, American studies, or a related field is required; graduate work or equivalent experience is highly recommended.


Application materials:

  • NCPE application form (pdf)
  • Transcript (unofficial transcripts are acceptable)
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member or recent employer
  • Work sample: Submit a paper, not to exceed 40 pages of text, on a U.S. topic in architectural history, landscape history, history of technology, or the built environment. The work sample should demonstrate primary research and a command of secondary sources in the relevant field of U.S. history. The paper should be unpublished and the applicant must be the sole author.

  • Submit your application directly to Heritage Documentation Programs.
  • Email all application materials (in PDF format) to Write "2019 Summer Application" in the subject line.
  • Deadline: March 1, 2019
  • Note: Incomplete applications will not be considered.
