Millions of visitors tour America's national parks every year, but few pause to consider how, when, or why the roads they travel on were built. Lying Lightly on the Land traces the history of park road development, shows how changing road conditions have affected visitors' perceptions of the national parks, and explains how park road designers attempt to balance the competing concerns of scenic preservation and public access.
