Built To Last: Ten Enduring Landmarks of Baltimore’s Central Business District

Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church10. Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church
233 North Charles Street
(1854-6, Richard Upjohn, architect)

The oldest Episcopal parish in Baltimore, St. Paul's has occupied this site since 1731. The present church, the only surviving work of Richard Upjohn in the city and the third church on the site, incorporates the relief sculptures and other architectural fragments of the previous church, which burned in 1854. Modeled after Early Christian basilicas in Italy, Old St. Paul's stands out from the many Gothic revival-style churches that were typical of the period.  For more information download the Old St. Paul's Episcopal Church .PDF file.
