Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016, and continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park (ADIP) programs with the public in June. All ADIP and Hawaiian cultural programs are free, but park entrance fees apply. Programs are co-sponsored by Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and Hawai‘i Pacific Parks Association. Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Welcomes 4th Grade Students Through Every Kid in a Park Initiative
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park invites all fourth grade students to visit the park for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program. Starting today, fourth grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks.

Ross Williams Selected as Fire Management Officer for Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park
Ross Williams is the new Fire Management Officer (FMO) for Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. He oversees fire management operations for the Pacific Island Park network, which includes 12 national parks in Hawai‘i, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa.

The National Park Service turns 99 years old on Aug. 25 and Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park – which marked its 99th birthday on Aug. 1 – want to give you a present – free admission! The usual entrance fee of $15 will be waived for all visitors on Tues., Aug. 25.

Due to the gradual deterioration of Tropical Depression Hilda and a decrease in forecasted wind speeds, park rangers have re-opened all previous storm-related closures within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

The exit trail leading out of Thurston Lava Tube will remain closed another week while workers repave the trail, following the replacement of an old electrical line.

Park Prepares for Hurricane Hilda
In anticipation of the heavy rain and wind forecast with the arrival of Hurricane Hilda, all backcountry areas in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will be closed as of 5 p.m. on Tues., Aug. 11 until it is safe to reopen them. No backcountry permits will be issued until park staff reassess the storm’s impact.

Exit route from lava tube to temporarily close
The exit route trail leading out of Thurston Lava Tube will close starting Mon., Aug. 3 while workers replace an electrical line. The lava tube will remain open, and the trail that leads into it will be used as both exit and entry.

The public is invited to a talk story session about the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park draft general management plan, wilderness study, and environmental impact statement (GMP/WS/EIS) at the Kīlauea Visitor Center, June 10, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. In addition, a formal wilderness hearing will be held during this meeting to receive comments specific to the wilderness study. Park representatives will answer questions and take comments.

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 2,282,752 people in 2014 visited four national park units on Hawai‘i, the Big Island, and spent $175,579,100 in communities near the parks. That spending supported 2,162 jobs on island, and had a cumulative benefit to the local community of $248,036,200.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is seeking public comment on the environmental review and decision regarding the construction and use of an emergency access route along the lava-covered section of Chain of Craters Kalapana Road. The environmental review for the emergency access route (22’ width) was completed in accordance with alternative NEPA arrangements developed by and in consultation with the Department of Interior and the President’s Council on Environmental Quality.

Park Receives Grant from National Park Foundation for Endangered Honu‘ea
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is one of 23 national parks selected to receive a 2014 Impact Grant from the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks. Clarence “Aku” Hauanio retired May 30, 2014 after 29 years of service to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Aku worked for the Natural Resources Management division as a pest control worker, and was devoted to protecting the endangered species within the park, including the nēnē (endemic Hawaiian goose), and the ‘ua‘u (Hawaiian petrel).

Park Rangers Rescue Endangered Plants
It’s not always lost or injured hikers who get rescued by park rangers. Rangers from Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park rappelled nearly 200 feet into a remote pit crater last week to “rescue” seeds and cuttings from four extremely rare Hawaiian plants in the national park. The park will use the seeds and cuttings to help reestablish these species.

Take a "Sunday Walk in the Park" with The Friends
Before the current activity on Kilauea’s east rift zone, the most long-lived rift eruption was that of Mauna Ulu, which began on May 24, 1969 and ended July 24, 1974. Fissures will be visible to hikers on the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park’s February 13 “Sunday Walk in the Park”. Led by Nick Shema, the two-hour, two-and-a-half-mile roundtrip walk will travel to the top of Mauna Ulu and back.
