The Pōhai Maile Internship Program
June 29-July 17, 2020

Aloha applicant:

Thank you for your interest in applying for the Pōhai Maile Internship Program at Haleakalā National Park. Please read the background information and instructions before filling out the application form. If you decide to pursue an internship position with us, you will need to submit your completed
application by email no later than April 17, 2020.

The Pōhai Maile Internship is a three-week program designed for high school students to learn about the National Park system, its efforts to protect natural, cultural, and historical resources, and potential careers. The program offers interns a chance to work alongside park professionals in various programs, including Resources Management, Interpretation, and Facilities Management. Activities are planned both inside and outside of the park to meet and work with some of our partners to learn about Maui’s cultural and conservation issues.

This program is intended for those who have an interest in pursuing a career in cultural and natural resources conservation and/or the National Park Service. It does not preclude applicants without prior experience in environmental service. It seeks individuals who have an interest and willingness to learn about the cultural resources and natural environment at Haleakalā and the ongoing efforts to protect its unique species, many found only on Maui.

Pōhai Maile is one of four internship programs at Haleakalā National Park. Others include Kupukupu ‘Āina for middle school students, ‘Imi I Ka Lama for college students, and E Ola Koa for recent graduates. All of these programs offer critical stepping stones towards a career in the National Park Service, a benefit offered specifically to aid Hawaii’s youth and their professional aspirations.

Living Allowance
Interns will earn a Living Allowance of $200.00 per week of participation and will be paid via direct deposit by Kupu, a park partner after conclusion of the program. The Living Allowance intends to help offset the cost of supplies and equipment required for the program.
