Harpers Ferry National Historical Park’s Classroom Lesson Plan of the Month Contest Rules

150th Anniversary of the John Brown Raid

April – October 2009

Lesson plans must focus on one of the following subject areas:

  1. John Brown’s life and times
  2. John Brown and abolition
  3. John Brown as a leader
  4. John Brown’s Raiders
  5. The Raid at Harpers Ferry and its effects
  6. Causes of the Civil War

Entries will be judged on clarity, originality, effectiveness, creativity, and cross-curricular capability. Each lesson plan should cover only one topic area and relate to a specific grade level and subject.

Each lesson plan should include the following:

· Your name and school

· Relevant subject area

· Grade level the lesson is designed for

· Classroom time to complete lesson

· Materials needed

· Standards correlation for your state

· Actual lesson plan

· Possible extension activities

· Images or handouts needed to complete lesson

· Useful websites or resources for other educators to get more information


One lesson plan will be selected each month, April-October 2009, to be posted on Harpers Ferry NHP website. The winner will also receive a book on John Brown courtesy of the Harpers Ferry Historical Association.

Eligibility and Contest Rules:

Entries can be submitted immediately. Deadline for each contest is the 20th of the previous month (March-September). For example, April’s lesson plan is due by March 20th. The contest is open to U.S. residents only. Void where prohibited or restricted by local, state, or federal law. Lesson plan entries must be your original work and must be submitted in English. All entries become the property of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (HAFE). By entering this contest you assign your entire right, title and interest in the submission, including the copyright to HAFE. You acknowledge that HAFE may, without limitation, edit, copy and publish entries in any media for use by other educators. You also allow HAFE to publish your name and school on the HAFE website and in promotional materials.
